Besser konnte der Saisonauftakt für das RN Vision STS Racing Team im italienischen Imola nicht laufen. Nach der bereits schnellsten Rundenzeit im Freien Training am Freitag bei regnerischen Bedingungen folgte die Pole Position im Silver-Klassement am Samstag bei sonnigen 28 Grad für die #111 Paarung Gabriele Piana (33, Italien) und Bas Schouten (25, Niederlande).
Die konstanten Rundenzeiten aus dem nassen Training vom Vortag konnten Koen Bogaerts (39, Niederlande) und Mark van der Aa (39, Niederlande) im Schwester BMW im Qualifying leider nicht bestätigen. Die beiden #110 Piloten erlangten Startplatz zehn beziehungsweise elf.
Startfahrer für den ersten Lauf mimte Bas Schouten im #111 BMW. Seine zweite Position verteidigte er bis zu den regulären Boxenstopps. Dank des schnellen Fahrerwechsels schaffte es Teamkollege Gabriele Piana den gegnerischen BMW hinter sich zu lassen und übernahm die Führung, die er auch bis zum Schluss souverän ausbaute. Der erste Saisonsieg war damit sicher! „Wir hatten ein sehr gutes Wochenende. Das Team war top vorbereitet und das Auto lief problemlos“, lobt Bas Schouten nach dem Wochenende. „Auch meinen neuen Teamkollegen mag ich sehr gerne. Er ist ein feiner Kerl. Imola hätte nicht besser laufen können.“
Im Schwester-BMW mit der Startnummer 110 konnten die beiden Niederländer ihre Erwartungen nicht ganz umsetzen. Die Außentemperaturen von mehr als 30 Grad machten Fahrer und Fahrzeug zu schaffen. Schlussendlich überquerten sie aber als gesamt Siebter die Ziellinie und wurden Dritter im Silver-Klassement! Ein Podiumserfolg, der die harte Arbeit belohnte. „Nach diesem verspäteten Saisonstart wusste keiner so recht, was uns an diesem Wochenende erwartet“, so Koen Bogaerts. „Aber das Niveau ist immer noch sehr stark. Das Wochenende war lehrreich und Gabriele ist als Fahrercoach sehr gut! Wir konnten uns stetig verbessern und so hoffe ich, dass wir beim nächsten Lauf in Misano unsere Qualifyings und vor allem die Rennpace deutlich steigern können“, lautet sein Resümee.
Gabriele Piana und Bas Schouten machen Doppelsieg am Sonntag perfekt
Sonntagmorgen ging es für die vier RN Vision STS Racing Team Fahrer ins zweite Rennen. Gabriele Piana und Bas Schouten fuhren ein Rennen, als hätten sie schon immer zusammen als Fahrerduo fungiert. Unbeeindruckt von der Konkurrenz fuhren sie einen Start-Ziel-Sieg ein, der den Doppelsieg am Wochenende abrundete. „Das Wochenende war perfekt“, schwärmt Gabriele Piana. „Das Auto war top, die BoP gut und das Team sehr gut vorbereitet. Ich hatte noch nie ein Wochenende, das zu 100% perfekt war. Ich war Schnellster in jeder Session, was will man mehr? Trotzdem glaube ich, dass die anderen noch nicht ihr volles Potential gezeigt haben. Die Lücken werden sich in Misano also doch noch etwas schließen.“
Mark van der Aa und Koen Boagerts im #110 BMW starteten von Platz elf ins Rennen. Eine Startposition im mittleren Feld bedeutet immer viel Verkehr beim Start, was das Rennen schwierig macht. Doch die beiden schlugen sich wacker, erkämpften die ein oder andere Position und sahen die Zielflagge am Ende als Klassen-Sechster. Das Statement von Mark van der Aa nach dem ersten Rennwochenende mit dem RN Vision STS Racing Team: „Im Großen und Ganzen sind wir sehr zufrieden. In den Trainings waren wir sehr gut – leider konnten wir das im Qualifying nicht umsetzen. Das war etwas enttäuschend für uns und auch die Rennpace hat uns noch gefehlt. Trotzdem war der Podiumsplatz im ersten Rennen mehr als wir erwartet haben. Das war sehr gut. Wir werden weiter an uns arbeiten. Mit dem Support von Piana und dem Team werden wir noch einiges schaffen! Ich freue mich auf Misano und die anstehenden Kämpfe!“
„Eine grandiose Leistung vom Team. Ich bin sehr stolz“
Teamchef Veit-Valentin Vincentz fasst das erste Rennwochenende der GT4 European Series Saison 2020 in eigenen Worten zusammen: „Wir waren von Beginn an vorne mit dabei. Wir hatten zwar ein paar technische Thematiken – vor allem mit der Temperatur weit über 30 Grad – aber das konnten wir gut managen. Die Konstanz wurde in beiden Rennen belohnt. Das war eine grandiose Leistung vom Team und ich bin mega stolz auf unsere Truppe! Mit einem neuem Fahrerquartett so etwas zu liefern ist schon alle Ehren wert. Mit Mark und Koen auf der #110 hatten wir leider ein suboptimales Qualifying und standen mittig in der Startaufstellung. Hier ist immer viel Kampf angesagt und nicht einfach weiter nach vorn zu kommen. Die beiden Starts waren super. Leider hat uns im 2. Rennen durch den frühen Boxenstopp die Full-Course -Yellow -Phase einen Strich durch die Planung gemacht und wir haben sehr viel Zeit verloren. Das vereitelte einen möglichen 2. Podiumserfolg. Schade! Die Jungs haben hart gekämpft.“
Na dann: Auf nach Misano! Bereits Anfang August gastiert die GT4 European Series auf der nächsten italienischen Rennstrecke (07.-09. August 2020).

RN Vision STS Racing Team kicks off the GT4 European Series with pole position and double victory!
With two overall wins, a podium placement and a pole position, the start of the GT4 European Series championship was more than successful for RN Vision STS Racing Team from Mönchengladbach. The team set the tone for a successful season at the kick-off in Imola (Italy) last weekend with the driver pairings of Piana/Schouten and van der Aa/Bogaerts.
Pole position thanks to Piana, overall win and third place in the silver rankings
The season opener in Imola, Italy could hardly have gone better for the RN Vision STS Racing Team. The best lap time during free practice with rainy conditions on Friday was followed by pole position in the silver rankings on Saturday with a sunny 28 degrees for the #111 pairing of Gabriele Piana (33, Italy) and Bas Schouten (25, the Netherlands).
Unfortunately, Koen Bogaerts (39, the Netherlands) and Mark van der Aa (39, the Netherlands) in the sister BMW were unable to sustain the consistent lap times from training under wet conditions on the previous day during qualifying. The two #110 drivers got starting positions ten and eleven.
Bas Schouten was the start driver for the first race in the BMW #111. He defended his second-place position until the regular pit stops. Thanks to the fast driver change, teammate Gabriele Piana managed to leave the opposing BMW behind and confidently took the lead, expanding it with aplomb down to the finish line. Thus the first win for the season was in the bag! “We had an excellent weekend. The team was very well prepared and the car was running beautifully,” said Bas Schouten in praise of the weekend. “I also get along really well with my new teammate. He’s a great guy. Imola could not have gone any better.”
In the sister BMW with the number 110, the two Dutchmen were not able to entirely meet their expectations. Both the drivers and the car struggled with outdoor temperatures of more than 30 degrees. However, they ultimately crossed the finish line in seventh place overall and came in third in the silver rankings! This podium placement rewarded their hard work. “After the delayed start to the season, nobody really knew what awaited us this weekend,” Koen Bogaerts said. “But the competition remains very strong. The weekend was instructive and Gabriele is a very good driver coach! We kept on getting better, and I hope that we can significantly improve our performance in qualifying and especially our racing pace during the next race in Misano,” he says in summary.
Gabriele Piana and Bas Schouten make it a double win on Sunday
The four RN Vision STS Racing Team drivers headed into their second race on Sunday morning. Gabriele Piana and Bas Schouten ran the race as though they had always driven together. Unimpressed by the competition, they took a start-finish victory, making it a double win weekend. “It was a perfect weekend,” Gabriele Piana enthused. “The car was in top shape, the BoP was good and the team was very well prepared. Never have I experienced such a 100% perfect weekend before. I was the fastest in every session, what more could you want? Yet I believe the others have not yet shown their full potential. So the gaps are going to narrow a bit more in Misano.”
Mark van der Aa and Koen Bogaerts in the BMW #110 headed into the race in starting position eleven. Since a starting position in the middle of the field always means lots of traffic at the start, it makes the race difficult. But the two fought valiantly, moving up here and there and ultimately passing the checkered flag as sixth in their class. Mark van der Aa had this to say after the first racing weekend with the RN Vision STS Racing Team: “On the whole, we are very satisfied. We did really well in training, but unfortunately we were unable to carry that over to qualifying. That was a bit disappointing, and our racing pace was lacking as well. Nevertheless, the podium placement in the first race was more than we expected. That was very good. We will keep on getting better. With the support of Piana and the team, we are going to accomplish a lot! I am looking forward to Misano and the upcoming competitions!”
“An outstanding team performance. I am very proud!”
Team leader Veit-Valentin Vincentz summed up the first racing weekend of the 2020 GT4 European Series season in his own words: “We were at the forefront right from the start. Even though we experienced some technical issues – especially due to temperatures considerably above 30 degrees – we managed them well. Our consistency was rewarded in both races. It was an outstanding team performance and I am very proud of them! Doing this well with four new drivers is quite an accomplishment. Unfortunately, our qualifying with Mark and Koen in the #110 was suboptimal, putting us in the middle of the starting line-up. That always means you have to fight hard and getting ahead is not easy. The two starts were great. Regrettably, the full-course yellow phase due to the early pit stop in the second race threw a wrench in the works, and we lost a lot of time. That foiled a possible second podium placement. What a shame! The boys fought valiantly.”
Well then: Off to Misano! The GT4 European Series is being hosted on the next Italian racecourse at the start of August (7 – 9 August 2020).
